CRAA Perimeter Road Project

A Builders’ Redi-Mix Project

Michigan Concrete Association Award – Industrial Road

  • Location: Capital City Airport. Lansing
  • Contractor: Walter Toebe Construction Co.
  • Engineer: C2AE
  • Owner: Capital Region Airport Authority

Continued development of the business park surrounding Lansing’s Capital City Airport is a part of the airport’s long-term master plan. To help spur development and improve access to the properties around the airport, over 4800 feet of new concrete roadway were constructed on the East Airport Service Road and Port Lansing Road.

Due to existing ditch lines and utilities, a haul road could not be built next to the roadway. Our concrete trucks had to use the prepared grade to get concrete to the paver. In cooperation with the excavating and grading contractor, extra attention was given to the aggregate base by means of two rollers and a grader.

The engineer for the project, C2AE, specified an 8-inch plain concrete pavement with doweled joints on a 4-inch aggregate base. Concrete for the roadway was supplied by Builders’ Redi-Mix, with the drivers placing concrete on the grade directly in front of the 2-track GOMACO GP-2600 paver. A consistent flow of ready-mix trucks was the key to productive paving on this project. Project specifications called for fresh concrete testing every 50 cubic yards. Sixty-five sets of tests were made on 3,300 cubic yards of concrete in three days, with no concrete out of spec.
